Mouse polling rate: do you need 4K or 8K?
Understand 1000 Hz, 4000 Hz and 8000 Hz mouse polling, the hardware it needs and when the extra reports are unlikely to matter.
The short answer
A 1000 Hz mouse reports up to once per millisecond and remains a sensible default for most people. Higher polling rates can make cursor updates more frequent, especially on high-refresh displays, but they increase CPU and battery demand and do not replace a comfortable shape or reliable sensor.

Polling rate is one part of the chain.
Mouse reports still pass through the game, CPU, frame pipeline and display. A very high polling rate cannot compensate for unstable frame times, a low-refresh display or a shape that makes accurate movement difficult.
Test the complete system.
Some games and older systems handle very high report rates poorly. If 4K or 8K causes stutter, unusually high CPU use or short battery life, stepping down to 1000 Hz can produce the more dependable experience.
Treat high polling as a preference, not a gate.

Does high polling drain a wireless mouse faster?
Usually yes. Sending more reports requires more activity from the mouse and receiver, so manufacturers commonly quote shorter battery life at higher rates.
