The short answer
Mechanical keyboards offer the widest choice of feel and the best chance of replacing switches, but they are not automatically quieter or more comfortable. Non-mechanical boards can be slim, quiet and affordable. Hybrid or semi-mechanical designs sit between them, but the label is inconsistent, so the exact mechanism matters more than the marketing name.

Feel is more important than the label.
Mechanical switches can be linear, tactile or clicky, and those categories still contain large differences in spring weight and sound. Membrane and scissor boards also vary. If possible, use the sound samples and try a similar switch before buying.
Hot-swap changes the ownership experience.
A hot-swappable mechanical board lets you replace compatible switches without soldering. That makes repairs and later experimentation easier. A soldered mechanical keyboard can still be excellent, but it should not receive the same customisation credit.
Quiet setups need a complete-system view.
Switch type is only one source of noise. The case, mounting system, stabilisers, desk surface and typing force all contribute. A well-built membrane or scissor board may be a safer quiet-room choice than an unspecified mechanical model.

Are mechanical keyboards better for gaming?

Are membrane keyboards bad?
No. They trade customisation and switch choice for simplicity, lower prices and often quieter, slimmer designs. They can be a strong fit for ordinary office and travel use.
What does semi-mechanical mean?
There is no single industry-wide mechanism behind the term. It can describe hybrid switches, membrane boards with mechanical-style parts or simply mechanical-like keycaps, so inspect the specification.
